Youngwood Sportsmen's Association

The Sportsman spring 2012

   SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT;

PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO SUPPORT H.R. 822, THE NATIONAL RIGHT- TO- CARRY RECIPROCITY ACT OF 2011 SPONSERED BY REP. CLIFF STEARNS AND REP. HEATH SHULER .

The Sportsman
spring 2012
Meetings the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 8 p.m. / Address:
196 Sportsman Road, P.O. Box 13 Youngwood, PA 15697

THE PRESIDENT’S SHELLBOX:   Roger Davis  724-832-1582

I informed the Board of Directors, at our November 2011 board meeting, that this may be my last year as president. I am finding it more relaxing, and less stressful, staying at home than spending 3, 4, and even sometimes 7 days a week at the club, and only a handful of us taking care of the club.  The Board of Directors, along with a few others, should not be entirely responsible for maintaining the the club. Quite frankly, I'm tired and worn out. With that being said WE NEED A LAKE CHAIRMAN AND COMMITTEE  AND SOMEONE TO ORGANIZE the Youth Fishing Derby or there will be no lake stocking or Youth Fishing Derby this year.

Our Ford tractor and implements were sold and a used Kubota with a backhoe and frontloader was purchased.

Anyone wishing to advertise their business can make a donation towards the construction of the Scorer's Huts on the trap fields and  a 24" X 20" metal sign will be displayed on one of the huts. Signs will be made this spring and will remain on the hut indefinately. For further info contact Roger Davis.

The lead reclamation project will resume this spring but, I have not been informed of a projected start date.

Signs were posted honoring the volunteers and sponsers of our 2011 Youth Fishing Derby and Game Dinner. Please patronize the sponsers of these events. We will try to list these in the newsletter as they occur.

Someone removed the 10" auger for the post hole digger and tried to remove the post hole digger, but found out it takes more than one person to carry it. If anyone knows who borrowed the auger tell them to return it.

A 12' farm gate will be placed across the lane going to the ranges, at the point where the "ranges closed" sign is placed. When the ranges are closed this gate will be locked and a more visable sign will be placed on the gate.

The Board of Directors is discussung the options of a Key Card gate that will automatically open and close without the member having to leave their vehicle. This expense is necessary due to the numerous times the gate is left open, by members, and the cost of new keys each time we replace the lock on the front gate.

John Musgrove, Wayne, and Chris will be in charge of the pheasant stockings this year. Anyone wishing to join the committee can contact the name and telephone number on the contact list.

Tom Polansky was elected Field Captain for 2012. He will be in charge of all field operations, i.e.  mowing, stockings, etc., but this dose not mean he has to physically do the work himself.

Danny Shaffer donated, built, and erected the life preserver and storage box at the lake. It should only be used in an emergency.

Your PA hunting License dose not have to be displayed on your back beginning with the 2012 hunting season. In addition to asking persons on the club grounds to display their pins and produce their membership card, when they are hunting and/or trapping you can ask them to produce their hunting license. If they can not produce a hunting license please call the PA Game Commission and give them the person's discription, license plate #, etc.

Any member wishing to chair a ground search committee to locate suitable ground that the club can purchase please contact Roger Davis.

Hunter-Trapper Education Classes may hold .22 and shotgun shooting classes for the students that passed the course, if there is enough interest. These classes will be conducted from 5:00 PM untill 7:00 PM on the Saturdays of the HTE courses. If this occurs the ranges will be closed during these hours.

The Trap Committee is looking for help on Tuesday evening, Sundays, and the Thursday evenings when they host the Twi-night shoot. Duties include loading the trap houses, score keeping, calling squads to the line, taking score sheets to and from the club house, and possibly transporting shooters to the trap field on the golf cart. anyone interested please contact J.T. Spangler ( trap chairman),
 or Fred Perillo.

Anyone interested in joining Youngwood's Twi-Night trap team please contact J.T., Fred, or Roger. We need shooters who have never shot before as well as experienced shooters. We need shooters of all ages, races, and sexes. Shooters need not be members of Youngwood Sportsmen's Association to shoot for our team. The Twi-Night shoots will begin on March 16, 2012 and run for 26 weeks. We will shoot each Thursday evening rotating between 5 different clubs, except for a thursday at the halfway point when there is no shoot. with your help we will take first place this year. Also, we need shooters to represent Youngwood at the Twi-Night meetings. If interested contact Roger Davis.

Youngwood registers ATA targets. See the dates elsewhere on this website and posted at the club.

When work is being done on the ranges they may need to be closed. We will try to give you as much notice as possible but , in some instances prior notice may not be possible. Please be patient with us as improvments benefit all of us and make our shooting more comfortable and safer for everyone.

Please pay attention to the bulletin board at the gate and on the porch of the clubhouse for notices.

The officers and trustees you entrusted to run your club will continue to run your club and inform you of pertinent information via the monthly meetings,  the bulletin boards and the web site.

YHEC begins their weekly training sessions in February. Read more in the YHEC session of this newsletter; and please remember these youth practice every Sunday on the small bore, and muzzle-loader ranges, and their sporting clay tower. Please be considerate and accommodate them, as this is the only day they can practice. If you can forego using the ranges from 1:00PM to 4:00PM on Sundays it would be greatly appreciated. Remember, no automatic weapons or firing on the ranges. Semi-auto weapons and firing are permitted, but please be considerate of other shooters.

Please remember to close and lock the gate when you are entering and leaving the club grounds. It has been left opened more times than I can count and this may invite non-members to use your club.

Stocking dates, work parties, range closings, HTE classes and other events  will be mentioned at the membership meetings and will be posted on the bulletin boards and web site calendar.  When you see someone using the club facilities, do not hesitate in asking them to show you their membership card. The number on their membership card must match their gate key. If someone can’t produce a membership card or/and these numbers don’t match contact an officer or trustee and report them. Gather as much pertinent information as you can i.e. name, license plate number, etc.

Remember your club needs you. Join a committee, volunteer to help stock Trout and Pheasants, participate in property postings and work parties, donate your time or make a financial contribution and remember join the NRA.

May all of you have a wonderful 2012 and be blessed with good health, happiness, and prosperity. This is an election year so get out and vote.

Starting February 13th and continuing for thirteen weeks the participants will practice 3-D archery, Sporting Clays, 22-long rifle, muzzle loader, wildlife ID and hunter responsibility on the club grounds. Then on June 18th the participants will compete at Scotia Range in State College PA with other YHEC participants from across Pennsylvania.
